THE UNB ART CENTRE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Over the course of this past year, the UNB Art Centre has been mining its collection for its hidden gems and finding a way to bring these works to light without the walls of traditional art gallery spaces. The UNB Art Centre embarked upon Revelations from the UNB Permanent Collection in response to the COVD-19 lockdown and reimagined the exhibit as an online experience.

The final installment of this project features a series of interviews that shine the spotlight on 7 women artists whose work is part of the UNB Permanent Collection.  In celebration of International Women’s Day, artists Jean Rooney, Jennifer Pazienza, Amy Ash, Nancy King Schofield, Karen Ruet, Ann Manuel and Vita Plume talk about their work, their creative process, and their experience as a woman artist in the 21st century.

The first interview will be released on Monday, March 8, International Women’s Day, as part of a collective celebration of the achievements of women. Interviews will be released on Wednesdays throughout the month of March until April 14. These interviews can be viewed online at https://www.unb.ca/cel/enrichment/art-centre/events.html

The UNB Art Centre gratefully acknowledges the support of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation through a Signature Grant and the Province of New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture for a COVID-19 Special Project Grant.  These grants made it possible to profile over 50 New Brunswick artists in our online and social media gallery spaces, connecting not only with our local community but with the larger global community as well.

In addition to the International Women’s Day Series, From Harm to Harmony: The Healing Power of Nature and Trees for Life will be on view from March 7- April 18 at the UNB Art Centre in Memorial Hall on the UNB Fredericton campus. The office of the UNB Art Centre is currently closed but the galleries will be open Sundays from noon until 5 pm by appointment at www.unb.ca/cel/artcentre

Environmental Exhibits Open at the UNB Art Centre

The UNB Art Centre re-opens on March 7 with two new exhibits Trees for Life by Nova Scotia artist Nancy Stevens and From Harm to Harmony: The Healing Power of Nature, a group exhibition in partnership with the Conservation Council of New Brunswick (CCNB) and the International Centre of Art for Social Change (ICASC) as part of their FUTURES/forward program.  FUTURES/forward — funded in part by the McConnell Foundation — is a mentorship program that embeds community-engaged artists, as artists-in-residence, in organizations to enhance and empower social change agendas.

Trees for Life is a meditation on the old growth trees of the Acadian Forest featuring “portraits” of 10 varieties including Balsam Fir, Red Maple, White Ash, Black Spruce, Red Oak to name a few.  The exhibit is a reminder that our future is tied to these ancient species and the health of our forests. As an artist and educator, Nancy Stevens delights in the details of each species using subtle gradations of colour and a pointillist technique devised by post-impressionist painters like Georges Seurat.  Each tree is given its own narrative and encircled by a decorative border which serves as a symbol of unity, and the cycle of life and death.  These paintings remind us that we are one with the earth, and that we, like these trees are part of a larger cosmic reality that is being threatened by climate change.

Nancy Stevens attended the Montreal Museum Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University in 1956.  She has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the New Brunswick Museum, the Confederation Centre, St. Francis Xavier University Art Gallery, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery as well as the Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery in Florenceville, N.B. Her work can be found in public and private collections throughout the Maritimes. She has received awards from the Nova Scotia Arts Council and the Sobey Art Foundation. She has given workshops at NSCAD University and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, St. Francis Xavier University and has served as the Artist-in-Residence at the Tatamagouche Centre in Nova Scotia. Nancy Stevens currently lives and maintains a studio in Antigonish. Nova Scotia.

From Harm to Harmony: The Healing Power of Nature, features work by community members across New Brunswick who responded to a call from CCNB to work with educator and community-based environmental artist Juliana Bedoya.  Located in British Columbia, Juliana Bedoya has facilitated a variety of community engagement projects bringing awareness to environmental issues through education and social practice.

As part of the Something Collective she has developed different projects including We Are Here and Our Footprint at various community centres in Vancouver where participants grew living moss graffiti murals as part of a community mapping project. With Through the Eye of the Needle she guided an international exploration with two schools in West Vancouver and Colombia on the impact of fast fashion on the environment.  Along with community art projects she has worked as a curator and Gallery Manager at ArtStarts in Schools in Vancouver, served as the Community Arts Supervisor at the Ferry Building Gallery, and was selected for an artist’s residency for the Incubator Project that was part of the Park Board’s Fieldhouse Activation Program of the City of Vancouver. Juliana Bedoya brings a wealth of experience and commitment to New Brunswick in her role as facilitator for this project.

From Harm to Harmony: The Healing Power of Nature is a collaborative project that drew participants from across the province, from varying backgrounds and disciplines united in a desire to inspire change through art. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, participants met online to discuss and develop ideas, to share skills and collaborate, and to reflect upon the growing threat of climate change. Together and individually, through a variety of media and techniques including embroidery, papier maché, photography, painting, rug hooking, video production, felting, and weaving, members offer varying perspectives on the natural world and the challenges facing society today.

By creating awareness about environmental concerns, particularly in our home province, the group wishes to move beyond the negative impacts to find a way forward and encourage positive social change.

From Harm to Harmony: The Healing Power of Nature will be on view in the East Gallery and Trees for Life will be on view in the West Gallery from March 7- April 18 in the UNB Art Centre at Memorial Hall on the UNB Fredericton campus.

The office of the UNB Art Centre is currently closed but the galleries will be open Sundays from noon until 5 pm by appointment. Please follow our exhibits and programs on-line and sign up for viewing.

ARTS AND CULTURE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR US. NOW WE NEED TO BE THERE FOR ARTS AND CULTURE.

IN GOOD TIMES, NEW BRUNSWICK’S
CULTURAL AND CREATIVE SECTORS
CONTRIBUTE TO OUR INTELLECTUAL
AND SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT, SOCIAL
DEVELOPMENT, AND WELLNESS, AND
CREATE A SENSE OF BELONGING AND
COMMUNITY.

In challenging times, we rely on our cultural
identity and creative communities even more.
Indeed, our province’s artists and creators have
worked to connect and inspire us throughout
the COVID-19 crisis—particularly in the early
months of lock-down—with virtual performances,
exhibitions, and readings, and by offering insight
into their creative processes.
Like our provincial tourism industry, cultural and

creative sectors are among the most affected by the
COVID-19 crisis. Performance art and performing
venues have been among the hardest hit.
Until we can return to life as we knew it, let’s
show our artists and creators the same love and
support they offered all of us, at an especially
difficult time.

To that end, the department of Tourism,
Heritage and Culture is launching a campaign
that celebrates our cultural industries—notably
art, music, literature, craft, and performing arts—
and encourages New Brunswickers to show
their support.

The Remix Collective

The Remix Collective is comprised of five Canadian artists from different backgrounds and life experiences: Norman Barney (Petrolia, Ontario), Claude Bolduc (Montreal, Quebec), Karine Giboulo (Montreal, Quebec), Terry Graff (Island View, New Brunswick), and Laurie Langford (Chatham, Ontario). Characterized by a directness of expression in a variety of media, their provocative ‘Singular Art’ is outside of the Canadian mainstream. They employ humour and satire to navigate challenging statements about society, politics, history, and the human condition.

As an American living in Canada, and a member of a very politically engaged family, Norman Barney’s practice is critical of American culture and politics, as well as the fraught relationship America has with violence.

Sexuality, mythology and criticism are key elements of Claude Bolduc’s drawings and paintings. Zoomorphic and anthropomorphic metamorphizations are present in his works exemplified by his series “The Tarot of Jézabel and Merlin (A Story of Love)”.

Karine Giboulo creates thought-provoking dioramas with highly elaborate constructions of toy-like settings with miniature figurines and houses. These assemblages turn doll play into a subversive nightmare and give focus to critical global issues.

The haunting figure of the bird, often depicted in a mutated form, is the leitmotif of Terry Graff’s art. His work deals with subjects such as real-life horrors in the world: war, environmental degradation, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

Laurie Langford employs subversive humour in her mixed media works to comment on the conventions of sexuality, domesticity, family, history and the body in order to stimulate debate on contemporary gender expectations.

Since 1976, Galerie Colline has been committed to exhibiting and encouraging excellence in contemporary art practices. We are proud to present this virtual exhibition of five contemporary artists whose works incite us to look critically at our current realities.
