Imperial Newsletter – MAY 2021

About Imperial Theatre: With the rising competition from television during the 1950s, Capitol Theatre, like many other movie theatres throughout North America, closed its doors. The Davis sisters, from the United States, purchased the theatre for $166,000 and donated the building to the Full Gospel Assembly Pentecostal Church. Upon completing extensive renovations, it was used as a place of worship for next 25 years.

In August 1982, a local group decided that the building should again be home to the performing arts in Saint John.

In November of that same year, the Full Gospel Assembly signed an agreement with a group of devoted theatre patrons and the Bi-Capitol Project was born.

A one dollar down payment was made with the promise that a cheque for a further $999,999 would be signed in one year. With the overwhelming support of the community, this promise was kept. Over the next 11 years, the theatre was reconstructed to its original 1913 grandeur.

The official reopening of Imperial Theatre was held on May 24, 1994.

Umbrella Projects Announces 2021 Lineup

In 2020, the Owens Art Gallery and Struts Gallery initiated Umbrella Projects, a partnership designed to pool our resources, energies, and respective strengths in order to facilitate off-site, in-print, online, and onscreen programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following an open call in the fall of 2020, eight exciting artist proposals were selected via a jury process. We are thrilled to announce that, over the next five months, Umbrella Projects will be realizing projects with Izzy FrancoliniJohn HaneyLee HendersonMarcia HuyerArianna RichardsonYvonne SingerDerek Sullivan, and Nic Wilson.

The program begins in April with HOT TIPS, by Sackville artist John Haney. Using the medium of neon lighting, Haney’s installation draws on high-impact advertising techniques and is designed to be both funny and obtuse. The words spelled out in its flashing red-and-white neon tubes move rhythmically between nihilist acquiescence and campy shake-off, at once creating and diffusing tension. In the artist’s words, this project represents “a synaptic leap we must make between where we are and where we want to be as our lives begin to realign with…what? How will we be different?” The work will be installed in the vestibule window of the Owens Art Gallery from 14 April to 11 June.

John Haney is a multidisciplinary artist who lives in an old farmhouse in Wood Point, New Brunswick. He earned a BA from Mount Allison University in 2001, and an MFA from the University of Guelph in 2016. He has exhibited in Canada, the US, and Germany. He was long-listed for the Sobey Award in 2011, and was a nominee for the Scotiabank Photography Award in 2012. In 2019, in order to make a home for art in the fields, forests, and shorelines that surround him, he launched Wood Point Art Projects with the multi-artist presentation titled the Ark. He is awaiting the outcome of a court injunction launched to forbid the existence of the word “impactful,” and has a pending copyright claim for the word ©Unique.

The Owens launches a new collection of visual descriptions written by Mount Allison Students

Throughout the winter 2021 semester, the Owens has continued to be a “teaching museum,” with students in FINH 3301, Museums, Education and Engagement exploring the public dimension of museums with course instructor Lucy MacDonald, Curator of Education and Community Outreach.

Together, the students in this class have considered the many factors that shape museum experience and the ways that museums engage and connect with audiences and communities. Central to these conversations have been ideas of access and accessibility.

With the goal of providing opportunities for students to apply their research and learning, students developed visual descriptions for a selection of serigraphs by Alex Colville from the Owens collection. Visual descriptions give blind and low-vision visitors access to artworks through descriptions that are written in language that is vivid, specific and succinct. Focussing on the visual elements of artworks without interpretation or analysis, visual descriptions reflect universal design thinking, offering any visitor a new point of entry into an artwork.

The visual descriptions in this collection were developed through a process of close-looking, drafting, peer review and editing. Students then recorded their descriptions.

This special collection is available now on SoundCloud featuring descriptions by Ella Christison, Kayla Collins, Ruth Curry, Libbie Farrell, Daisy Graham, Kailey Haws, Miranda King, Alice Liu, Chloe Lundrigan, Victoria MacBeath, Brookie Martin, Nat Martin, Sophia Patrell, Laika Dadoun, Michelle Roy, Jasmine Saulnier, Shane Smith Bergeron and Stuart Trenholm.

The visual descriptions developed by students in this course make an important contribution to expanding accessibility at the Owens. The Owens is committed to reducing barriers to access with the goal of becoming a barrier-free facility within the next ten years.

The serigraphs

In 2013, in memory of his late wife Rhoda (Wright) Colville, Alex Colville made a gift to the Owens Art Gallery of the complete set of thirty-five silkscreen prints produced by the artist during his lifetime. The first print, titled After Swimming, was made in 1955 and the last print, titled Willow, was made in 2002. The Owens Art Gallery is the only institution to own the complete set of Colville’s prints.
Image description: Within a large gallery space, unframed, matted prints by Alex Colville are displayed on tables. Students sit on chairs near the works, many writing in notebooks, while one uses a laptop. In the foreground, on the table nearest us, is a large circular composition depicting a crow with a silver spoon that flies upwards against a blue sky with scattered clouds.
