ARTS WRITING INTENSIVE OCTOBER 12-13, 2018: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

ArtsLink NB is pleased to present a two-day arts writing intensive workshop in Saint John, NB, on October 12th and 13th from 10-4. Led by Canadian Art magazine staff Merray Gerges and Yaniya Lee, this workshop will teach participants how to write reviews and essays about the arts. Participants will learn how to describe and evaluate arts for various audiences and publications. Participants will also learn how to pitch their work, and will benefit from one follow up editing session from the course instructors. $50 to attend; catering provided. Applicants must be available for the full day both days of the workshop.

Merray Gerges is a Toronto-based art critic, editor and investigative journalist. She studied art history at NSCAD and journalism at King’s University in Halifax, where she co-founded and co-edited CRIT paper, NSCAD’s first student newspaper. She was a Hyperallergic mentee at the Walker Art Center and the inaugural writer-in-residence at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in 2015, and in summer 2016, she was Editorial Resident at Canadian Art, where she is now Assistant Editor. Her reporting and criticism have appeared in Canadian Art, C Magazine, M OMUS, the Walker Art Center Reader, Hyperallergic and more, discussing topics ranging from the radical potential (and shortcomings) of intersectional feminist memes to art-world race politics.

Yaniya Lee’s interdisciplinary research questions critical-reading practices and reconsiders Canadian art histories. Lee was previously on the editorial advisory committees for Fuse and C Magazine. She is a founding collective member of MICE Magazine, a member the We Curate, We Critique collective and a member of the EMILIA-AMALIA working group. Last summer she participated in the Banff Research in Culture: Year 2067 residency and organized a series of public conversations with Black Canadian artists alongside Cauleen Smith, Jerome Havre and Camille Turner’s “Triangle Trade” exhibition at Toronto’s Gallery TPW. She is the 2017-2018 writer-in-residence at Gallery 44 and currently works as the associate editor at Canadian Art magazine. Photo by: Yuula Benivolski
