Call for Submissions: StudioWatch Emerging Artist Series
Made possible by Earl and Sandy Brewer The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is calling for submissions for the Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Series – Painting 2016 exhibition. This innovative series provides New Brunswick artists, in the early stages of their career, with the opportunity for a solo exhibition, the publication of an exhibition brochure and the purchase of one of their works by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. In 2016 the Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Series – Painting 2016 exhibition will be held at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton from October 20, 2016 to January 15, 2017. To be eligible an artist must:
Reside and produce art in New Brunswick (consideration will be given to permanent residents of New Brunswick attending higher education degree programs or conducting temporary projects outside of New Brunswick)
Have at least five years of experience in art making
Have yet to have a solo exhibit in a major public gallery or museum
Have a particular body of work ready for exhibition for October 2016
Each submission package must contain the following components: curriculum vitae, artist statement (400-500 words, five (5) digital image samples of work (JPEG format, file size 500-800 KB). Please submit all packages electronically to curatorial@beaverbrookartgallery.org.

The Executive Director position plays a very important role at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. The job purpose being: To provide a day-to-day effective, efficient operation of the organization, and to meet strategic goals and objectives of Charlotte Street Arts Centre both as a building manager and as a liaison with the arts community and the public. This is a very exciting and dynamic time, we are looking for candidates that have passion and dedication for the leadership in our arts community.

Summary of Position The Executive Director oversees all aspects of the organization’s operations which will include; strategic planning, governance, finances, budgeting, grant-writing, fundraising, public relations, human resources and staff management, facility management, project management, program delivery and community development.

Qualifications

Education: Undergraduate degree, with preference to fine arts, social sciences, business administration or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years previous experience in management for a non-profit organization with responsibility for strategic planning, finances, policy and process development and implementation, and fundraising. Demonstrated commitment to the arts. Experience working independently but also collaboratively with staff, volunteers and diverse stakeholders. Sensitivity to the impact and role of society related to poverty, aboriginal and multi-cultural experiences, sexuality and gender identification, addictions and health (the social determinants of health), violence, etc.

Competencies & Skills: Excellent interactive communication – both written and oral, including diplomacy and clarity. Advanced grant-writing skills and experience in writing. Advanced knowledge of the arts and culture sector and programming. Advanced planning and organizing skills: set priorities, develop a work schedule, manage time effectively, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information, and activities. Relationship/ network building – proactively build relationships and networks that meet specific program needs, including within corporate and non-profit sectors. Leadership Skills – able to inspire staff and Board to hold and work within the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Teamwork Skills – able to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Grants for Filmmakers Deadline August 1

AFCOOP is pleased to announce a call for applications for our Grants for Filmmakers program. AFCOOP’s filmmaking grants support the production of local independent films through in-kind equipment and resources. There are grants that are open to the public as well as some that are only open to AFCOOP Full Members. New this year two of the grants include a small amount of cash in addition to the regular in-kind services. AFCOOP Grants for Filmmakers grants can be used as seed money for a larger fundraising plan or can be used to cover all the costs associated with production. Grants are adjudicated by a peer jury and notes from the jury process will be made available upon request. 

There are two deadlines per year – August 1st and December 1st

Please note: AFCOOP will be closed the week of Aug. 3rd – 7th. Please put your applications in the mail post-marked Aug. 4th (as Aug. 3rd is a holiday) or drop them off in the AFCOOP Office before 5pm July 31st.

Duties

Duties may include: greeting and providing information to patrons, directing traffic, general set up of the village and festival site, maintaining entrance/exits, providing transportation for artists, ensuring positive environment for patrons.

Volunteer Time Requirements

The success of the festival is dependent upon volunteers completing all scheduled shifts. All volunteers must commit a minimum of:

  • Pre-Festival: 10-15 hours
  • During Festival: 16-20 hours

Volunteer Musts

  • Be a minimum of 19 years of age
  • Enjoy working with the public and have strong interpersonal skills
  • Be high energy
  • Ability to walk or stand for periods at a time

Volunteer Assets

  • First Aid/CPR training
  • Have a valid driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract
  • Previous volunteer experience

“The Other Side” Web Series Contest is now open to Canadians of Aboriginal ancestry

The Other Side Web Series Contest is open to Canadians of Aboriginal ancestry (self-identified, Status, Non-Status, Inuit and Métis) between the ages of 15-30.

We invite you to submit short creative videos to a web series contest about the afterlife between June 21 and September 16, 2016. The contest encourages young First Nations, Inuit and Métis people to connect with the elders in your communities and ask what they believe happens after this life. You can then put together a short video (2 to 7 minutes in length) conveying that answer in whatever creative way you wish – animation, documentary, music video, etc. The possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.

The Other Side will select up to 10 entries to be featured as part of a web series that will be shared online when Season 3 of the TV show airs on APTN this fall. Winners will get some consultation with the production team behind the show, and also be eligible for prizes that are currently being fundraised through an Indiegogo campaign that ends on June 30. The goal is to raise $5500, which should leave about $5000 after fees paid to the platform and credit card companies. Whatever is raised will be split evenly among the winners (after the costs and fees for the crowdfunding campaign are subtracted).

To submit:

  • You must be a Canadian citizen between the ages of 15 and 30 years old.
  • You much be of Canadian Aboriginal ancestry (self-identified, Status, Non-Status, Inuit and Métis).
  • Youth are expected to approach and collaborate with elders in their communities to answer the question “what happens after this life?”
  • This question can then be answered in a short creative video (2-7 minutes in length), taking any form you want (documentary, scripted, animation, music video, etc).
  • Once the video is completed, upload it to Vimeo or YouTube and submit via our Contest Submission Form.
  • Submission means full acceptance of the Contest Rules and Regulations.
  • Minors submitting videos will also need to upload this Consent Form completed and signed by their parent or guardian.

VOLUNTEER WITH THIRD SHIFT

We are recruiting THIRD SHIFT Volunteers for our 2016 event in the following areas!

1. General Event Set- Up Available between 2 and 8pm, the day of THIRD SHIFT (August 19th). Tasks will include: lifting materials to project sites, helping with set up, coordinating with artist/ THIRD SHIFT committee members. Required Skills: moderate to heavy lifting, strong communication and problem solving skills. You will be working along side artists to turn their brainwaves into reality!

2. Event Guides Available two weeks before event date to become acquainted with THIRD SHIFT projects. Tasks will include: leading the public through the event, handing out event maps and giving directions, providing general information about project themes and conceptualizations. Required Skills: strong communication skills and good interpersonal skills are required for this task. You will be the face of THIRD SHIFT!

3. Mail Carriers Available one to two weeks before the event to deliver invitations to residents in the uptown area. Required Skills: walking, strolling, sauntering, and being merry! May involve trespassing. Just kidding, don’t do that. You will be vital to spreading the word about THIRD SHIFT!

4. Parking Patrol Available from 12pm to 7pm, the day of THIRD SHIFT. Tasks will include: passing out flyers, posting flyers to cars in the area, answering general questions about the event! Required Skills: bossing people around. Being intimidating. (Just kidding again. Be friendly and informative, we want people to like art after all…)

5. General Event Tear Down Available between 11pm and 2am, the night of THIRD SHIFT. Tasks will include: disassembling projects, transporting materials, cleaning up any debris. Required skills: moderate to heavy lifting, organizational skills (for loading supplies into vehicles: Tetris players preferred)

CALL TO ARTISTS: ARTSLINK SHORT & SWEET SPEAKER SERIES

ArtsLink is hosting an  artist’s talk night series right here in NB! Fun, short presentations where the speaker has 6 minutes and 40 seconds to give a talk accompanied by 20 slides (displayed for 20 seconds each). We’re looking for artists of every discipline to participate in one of these fun and energetic evenings. Participants are asked to prepare a presentation about their own work; they can share current work, upcoming work, and/or an older project.

We have so many fantastic members (225 and counting) doing so many fantastic things, we thought it would be great to bring folks together to find out what their peers are up to. Let’s bust everyone out of their studios to share our stories and perhaps a drink. ArtsLink will facilitate these Short & Sweet speaker nights, including tech support and setting up slideshows ahead of time. For our pilot round, there will be four events taking place across New Brunswick, one in Saint John, Fredericton, Sackville, and Woodstock.

Fibre Arts Network – Autumn Splendour: Call for Submissions

Autumn Splendour: Call for Submissions

 The Fibre Arts Network (FAN) is hosting an Exhibition at the Fredericton Public Library with an “Autumn Splendour” theme for the month of October, 2016.

We are inviting initial digital submissions to be sent by September 9th, 2016 to the FAN representatives listed below. Individuals are invited to submit up to 5 fibre-related items (unless items are quite small and are done in a “series”).

Note: there is no submission fee, but entrants must be members in good standing of the Fibre Arts Network (FAN) (membership is $20 per year or $10 per year for students).

 A selection committee and jury will be established for the exhibition. Final selections will be based on thematic suitability, size and space limitations at the gallery. Work must be available for the duration of the exhibition. If work is accepted, drop off dates will be September 18-23. The exhibition is scheduled for the month of October at the Fredericton Public Library Gallery, 12 Carleton Street in Fredericton NB.

An exhibition opening will be held at the Fredericton Public Library in October, 2016.

As the Executive Director for the past two years, and through prior roles at CSAC, Kate has been instrumental in the continuous evolution of the Centre. From an idea sparked in 2001, to the transformation of this 130 year building into a creative and flourishing space, Charlotte Street Arts Centre has become what it is because of amazing people like Kate. We are so happy for her to have been given the opportunity to better our city through her new position on council, and we look forward to seeing the growth of the Arts and Culture Sector in our community. Kate, we thank you so much for your passion, your drive, your skills and your continued love for Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Your enthusiasm and commitment to CSAC has helped it to grow into the well-established community arts centre that it is today, and we are forever grateful. The New Brunswick Museum is seeking an individual to provide administrative support in the Business Office 4 days per week, occassional weekends.

Duties: The primary duties include preparing and posting bank deposits and journal entries; assisting with processing billings and accounts payable; following up on past due accounts; account reconciliations; assist with payroll and other projects and tasks as required.

Qualifications: University degree or completed community college; 3 years experience in a fund accounting environment; written and spoken competence in English is essential; written and spoken competence in French would be an asset. Successful candidate must have strong communication skills, a great work ethic and the ability to work independantly as well as part of a team. Required computer skills include experience with Accpac and Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint.

Job: Curator of Social History for the New Brunswick Museum

The Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture is seeking a Curator of Social History for the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Reporting to the Head of the Humanities Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing curatorial affairs and related content development for Social History collections of the New Brunswick Museum (NBM).  The Curator of Social History oversees that curatorial department to ensure that strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation are ongoing activities that reflect the institutional mission and move the NBM forward. She or he will also serve as an advisor, providing direction to exhibition development, interpretation of collections, and educational programs. She or he will also ensure that all museological standards are adhered to in regards to stewardship of the museum’s artifact collections. The incumbent will also serve as an expert in New Brunswick history and material culture, working with other art and history curators to curate the relevant collections and directing their organization, development, maintenance, interpretation, and use. The Curator of Social History will be responsible for taking a leading role in the development, implementation and interpretation of exhibitions and projects related to social history.

The Michaëlle Jean Foundation is inviting underserved youth, aged 18-30, to apply for its Young Arts Entrepreneur business fund. The initiative provides successful applicants with $7,500 in start-up funds, over a two-year period, as well as seasoned mentors from the business sector. The program was designed with the assistance of youth business organization Futurpreneur Canada to fill a gap identified by community youth and arts organizations across the country. It is supported by BMO Financial Group and CIBC.
