The City of Fredericton invites design submissions from New Brunswick professional artists, graphic designers, and architects for the art component of the Carleton Street Gateway Columns.
As part of the Garrison District Revitalization Project, the columns will articulate entry onto Carleton Street (at Queen Street) and into the broader Garrison District. The attached ‘Carleton Street Gateway Features’ provides graphic representation of the columns and adjacent site improvements.
The gateway column includes a 3.824 – metre steel column that is a ‘laser-cut perforated and rolled steel sheet’, cut to illustrate a visual “story” within the positive and negative spaces of the column. The “story” should include elements of the site’s military history (examples include the March of the 104th and the founding of the Canadian military), as well as, the evolution of the Garrison District into a cultural and festival public square space. The artist may also consider other elements from Fredericton’s history and culture.
The selected design will be converted to a vector-based digital drawing that will be used to ‘laser-cut’ the steel sheet prior to rolling and installation on bases.
Note that the top of the columns will be capped with a beaver statue, the design of which is not included in the scope of this Call for Design Concepts. The interior of the columns will include the columns’ structural and lighting components.
Eligibility and Process
The design competition is open to all New Brunswick professional artists, graphic designers or architects. Submissions will be reviewed by a qualified jury and a shortlist will be invited to submit a fully detailed proposal.
The process for this Call is divided into three phases (as follows):
Phase One – Applicants are invited to submit their expression of interest and qualifications.
Applications must also include the following:
Demonstrated experience with art of similar size and scope
Portfolio – photos and descriptions of past work including year installed, location, and budget.
The jury will review the submissions and select one or more artists to move into Phase Two.
Phase Two – Selected artists will be invited to submit detailed designs and concepts and will deliver a presentation of these materials. One artist will be selected to move on to Phase Three.
Phase Three – The successful artist will be commissioned to finalize their designs (if necessary) so that it can be converted to a digital vector-based drawing. The scope of this phase includes any revisions that may be required to ensure the final design suits the column format. The City of Fredericton will facilitate the manufacture of the columns, following approval of the artist’s final design.
The budget is provided in two sections. First, each of the artists selected to move on to Phase Two will be provided $500. The artist selected for Phase Three will be provided $2,500 upon committee acceptance of the artwork.
