WARPED: A Collaborative Project

Join us at the UNB Art Centre in Memorial Hall on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 pm for a special one-time performance of Warped by cellist Emily Kennedy, poet Rebecca Salazar and textile artist Emily Blair.
WARPED is a multi-disciplinary project that, like the game of telephone, passes information form one person to the next. In this case, a completed work from one artist is sent to the next, allowing that artist to respond by translating the patterns into the media of their own new and unique work.
The project is founded on a translation process inspired by pattern-making in weaving. By using a rubric to translate the alphabet to eight characters (A through H), poetry can then be directly translated to the pitches found in music (A through G, with an additional variable pitch) or to patterns on an eight-harness loom. This allows the artists to create works that are based on direct translations of each other’s disciplines.
Rebecca Salazar is the author of Guzzle (Anstruther Press) and the knife you need to justify the wound (Rahila’s Ghost Press), which is forthcoming this Fall. Recent publications include poetry and non-fiction in Briarpatch, Minola Review, and The Puritan.Rebecca is currently a poetry editor for The Fiddlehead and Plenitude magazines, and a PhD candidate at UNB.
Emily Blair graduated from the Textile studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with a specialization in Weaving. While there, she won several awards, including the Dr. Ivan Crowell Award for Excellence in Weaving and the New Brunswick winner of the BMO 1st Art! Competition. She has exhibited locally at Flourish Festival and also in Toronto at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery. In 2018, Emily moved to Montreal and enrolled in the Art History program of Concordia University and maintains a weaving studio in her home.
Emily Kennedy received her Masters of Music Performance from the University of Ottawa in 2016 and her Bachelor of Music at Wilfred Laurier University. She was the emerging-artist-in residence with UNB’s Centre for Musical Arts in 2017 and recently completed residencies in the UK with the Britten-Pears Young Artist program and in Fredericton with the Fredericton Arts Alliance. She performs with a number of chamber ensembles and symphonies including Atlantic Sinfonia and Symphony New Brunswick, as well as the Kalaya String Quartet and in a duo with classical guitarist Steven Peacock. She has received several grants from ArtsNB, performed on a number of recording projects, and at major music festivals throughout New Brunswick.

The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome!
