A HANDMADE ASSEMBLY: Call for Proposals

 

We invite Artists and Writers from across Canada and abroad to submit proposals for an upcoming publication exploring the theme of the Handmade.

Deadline for submissions: January 5, 2021

The origins of this publication are rooted in a long-running annual event hosted by Struts Gallery and the Owens Art Gallery that brought together artists, curators, and makers from the region and beyond to lead discussions, facilitate workshops, initiate projects, exhibit work, and share in a common thread—the handmade.

A Handmade Assembly originated in response to an increased interest in the handmade, deskilling, and DIY aesthetics that emerged in contemporary art practices near the beginning of the decade. The topic continues to appeal to artists exploring the extraordinary potential of craft processes, materials, and techniques, both for their capacity to speak directly and viscerally and for their political and historical potency.

For its tenth and final iteration, the long-running programme will be re-envisioned as an ambitious, bilingual book project that parlays nine years’ worth of inquiry into a comprehensive volume, with the goal of providing a multi-faceted view of the role of the handmade in contemporary art, while also extending these discussions to a new format.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Artists Projects in Print

Deadline January 5, 2021

A Handmade Assembly has always encompassed a wide range of artistic practices and areas of research, including photography, performance, mending practices, food culture, collage, printmaking, flower arranging, and the intersection of new technologies with traditional craft approaches. We invite artists working in all disciplines to consider how the broad theme of the “handmade” might translate to a project on the printed page. Artists may document existing projects or produce new works. We encourage play within the format of the book, including handmade tactile elements, instructional works, creative writing, printed cut-outs, pull-out and tipped-in materials (bearing in mind cost, labour and edition size), etc.

Submission Format for Artists:

  • One-page (max.) description of the proposed project and the themes addressed
  • Up to 10 images of past work
  • Descriptions for each image including: title, date, materials, dimensions, etc.

A Handmade Assembly has dedicated nine years towards pushing back against dominant art narratives that marginalize craft practices and has worked to foster and support an appreciation of the myriad art forms encompassed by the term handmade. We invite writers to interpret the topic of the “handmade” broadly, with the aim of presenting a multi-faceted view of the role of the handmade in contemporary art. Writers are encouraged to propose critical, historical or interpretive essays, interviews, creative writings, and so forth that address the intersection of contemporary art and the handmade. Ideally, we are seeking texts ranging from 500 to 1000 words.

Submission Format for Writers:

  • A brief one-page (max) proposal for an essay, interview or other text work

OR

  • A completed piece that has not been previously published (max. 1000 words);

BLACK DOG & ONE-EYED PRESS is currently seeking submissions of up to five poems. We anticipate the 2021 print publication of a book of paintings along with poems which speak to or in some way reflect upon the state of the world in 2020 and the ways in which we, as individuals and as societies, have responded, and/or how we might imagine going forward.

The paintings will be selected from a series which artist and educator Bill Liebeskind began a few weeks into the Covid lockdown in NYC. Each painting shows someone in a mask. During the Second World War17,000 Jews were enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forcesproudly serving their country despite Canada’s “none is too many” Jewish immigration policy. Of these 17,000, at least 279 were women. To highlight the contributions of these Jewish servicewomen and to combat the lack of public awareness of their participation in WW II, this call for submissions seeks proposals for original 2D digitally generated artworks that tell the story of these Jewish Canadian military personnel.

These works will be printed on banners that will be hung throughout the existing exhibitions and galleries at The Military Museums, Calgary, during Jewish Heritage Month, May 2021.In addition to the physical exhibition, artworks will also be virtually circulated on the project website.

Ten artists will be invited to create works based on the proposals submitted. Criteria for evaluation include: clarity of theme, quality of research supporting proposal, creativity, visual presentation, and quality of supporting documents. Jurors are: Dr. Jennifer Eiserman, Associate Professor, Department of Art, University of Calgary; Saundra Lipton, Adjunct Librarian, University of Calgary; Dick AvernsCanadian Forces Artist; and David Bercuson, Department of History, University of Calgary.

Selected artists will receive a contract indicating that each artist retains copyright and will be paid a CARFAC group exhibition fee of $395.

Submissions are due December 31, 2020.  Artists will be notified by January 22, 2021 regarding the jury’s decision. PROFESSIONAL ARTIST / ART LOVER

Dialogue New Brunswick (DNB) will receive applications from professional artists or art lovers, with a rich and extensive culture in the arts, an excellent knowledge of New Brunswick’s artistic community, and who are familiar with interpreting artwork until November 23, 2020.  The successful candidate will accompany Dialogue NB in the design and implementation of the “Artistic Expression” component of its upcoming public consultation. 

CONTEXT

Dialogue NB is a non-profit organization, led by a volunteer board of directors, with a mandate to help the Province of New Brunswick to be a more socially cohesive community.

As part of its mandate, Dialogue NB will launch a public consultation at the end of November to survey the state of New Brunswick on social cohesion in depth and amplify New Brunswickers’ voices. This consultation is part of a two-step process.

Phase 1: During the first 6 months (November 30, 2020 to May 31, 2021), all New Brunswickers will be invited to express themselves on what social cohesion means to them (ideal vision, challenges, issues, etc.). They will have the choice between six ways of expression, which will open up as the consultation progresses. From November, a survey (online), an open forum (online), and the opportunity for representatives of organizations to meet and talk at the Government House will be offered. In early 2021, three new components will gradually be added : “Public Dialogue,” “Artistic Expression” and “Youth” (Little Childhood, Primary, Secondary). The findings of the consultation will be made public at the end of this six months. They will also be submitted to the Lieutenant-Governor, the Honourable Brenda Murphy, in addition to the Premier and other key decision-makers in New Brunswick.

Phase 2: Based on the results of this consultation and its data, Dialogue NB will define a reading grid of the province’s social cohesion challenges: this grid will serve as a basis for reflection on the development of solutions by and for New Brunswickers. The duration of the second phase will be six (6) months, starting in June 2021 until December 2021.

MISSION

Accompanying Dialogue NB in the design and implementation of the “Artistic Expression” component of its upcoming public consultation:

  • Solicit public interest in this area.
  • Encourage New Brunswickers to express themselves through the artistic path(s) of their choice about what social cohesion means to them. Invite them to submit their works to Dialogue NB (Painting, collage, sculpture, photography, dance, music, literary work, poetry, embroidery, beading… The possibilities are infinite!).
  • Analyze and interpret each work of art addressed to Dialogue NB.
  • Write a full report for Dialogue NB on messages delivered under this component.

is seeking exhibition submissions for the 2022-2023 season. All professional artists and artist teams, as well as emerging artists, are invited and encouraged to submit proposals for solo, group, or curated exhibitions.

About AX:
AX is committed to developing, supporting and promoting exhibition opportunities and experiences for New Brunswick artists. In choosing exhibitions, AX seeks a balance of established and emerging artists, exhibiting works from our community and beyond.
AX offers an average of six exhibitions a year and strives to pay artists fair compensation for the right to exhibit their work. We include artist fees based on national standards in all grant applications so these fees can be paid to artists whenever possible. AX is also dedicated to exhibiting children’s art and student work created in local-area schools and through our own programming.
AX’s exhibitions are selected by a rotating panel of respected artists and art educators knowledgeable in the discipline involved. The selected juries base their decisions on the artist’s statement and images submitted as part of exhibition proposals.

Call For Submissions ~ Masked
BLACK DOG & ONE-EYED PRESS is currently seeking submissions of up to five poems. We anticipate the 2021 print publication of a book of paintings along with poems which speak to or in some way reflect upon the state of the world in 2020 and the ways in which we, as individuals and as societies, have responded, and/or how we might imagine going forward.

The paintings will be selected from a series which artist and educator Bill Liebeskind began a few weeks into the Covid lockdown in NYC. Each painting shows someone in a mask.   • Deadline: Submissions must be received by 31 December, 2020.
  • Where: Send to parrsboroart@gmail.com and include the words “masked submission” in the subject of your email.
  • Bio: Include a very brief bio. 75 words or less.
  • Format: Send your submission as a single PAGES or WORD file. If formatting is important, please also include a PDF.
  • Simultaneous submissions: Please note if your submission is a simultaneous submission and let us know if it is accepted elsewhere.
  • Confirmation: We aim to acknowledge receipt of all submissions within 1 – 3 weeks. If you have not heard from us after three weeks, please email parrsboroart@gmail.com.
  • Publication: Poets whose work is selected will be notified by 15 March 2021.
  • Copyright: Black Dog & One-Eyed Press holds first serial rights for material that we publish. The copyright automatically reverts to the author upon publication. We ask that Black Dog & One-Eyed Press be acknowledged in any subsequent publication of the work. It is ok to submit previously published poems so long as the author holds the copyright. If the work has been previously published, please list where and when it was published.

Emerging Artist Program: Ceramics

AX: The Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex has a brand new ceramics centre and we are looking for applicants for our Emerging Artist Program. It is a sixteen week paid position with 24 hour access to the ceramics centre. The goal of this program is to help emerging artists in the ceramics/pottery field get a boost to their career by helping overcome barriers that are often the case early in a career.

Jones Gallery in Saint John, NB is currently soliciting exhibition or representation proposals. They are looking for early to mid-career contemporary visual artists who are based in or have a connection to Atlantic Canada. Artists should have strong conceptual component to their work, and they value a record of public exhibition and a challenging visual practice. Jones Gallery has a rigorous and ambitious exhibition schedule and their programming will focus on painting, sculpture and installation-based work. Artists who fit their mandate are invited to submit a proposal to caleb@jonesgallery.ca. WFNB 2020 Writing Competition

2020 Writing Competition is Open!

The Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick encourages all New Brunswickers to submit their poems, stories or creative essays to its 2020 Writing Competition.

The competition awards $2,600 in cash prizes.
Deadline for entries is February 29, 2020.

All submissions must be made electronically through the WFNB website at wfnb.ca/competitions.

The prize purse includes the David Adams Richards Prize, awarded for a collection of short stories, a novella, or a substantial part of a longer novel, the Douglas Kyle Memorial Prize for short fiction, the Alfred G. Bailey Prize for poetry manuscripts, the Fog Lit Books for Young People Prize, the Sheree Fitch Prize for Young Writers, the Narrative Nonfiction Prize, and the Dawn Watson Memorial Prize for a single poem.

Youth ages 13 to 18 can enter their poems or stories into the Sheree Fitch Prize category, aimed at young writers.

In addition to the prize money, winners will read their work at WFNB’s annual literary festival, WordSpring, being held this year in Fredericton, NB, May 22-24. Many WFNB winners have gone on to publish their work, including André Narbonne (David Adams Richards Prize, 2008), Jerrod Edson (David Adams Richards prize, 2013) Kerry-Lee Powell (Alfred G. Bailey Prize, 2013), and Moncton Anglophone Poet Laureate Kayla Geitzler (Alfred G. Bailey Prize, 2014).

ROADSIDE ATTRACTION, a collaborative group exhibition by Connexion ARC in partnership with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Roadside Attraction is a collaboratively created & curated group exhibition that brings together New Brunswick artists, writers, and curators to examine NB identity through the lens of the tourism industry, using the province’s kitschy, nostalgic, unusual, or forgotten attractions as a catalyst. Connexion is seeking emerging & established New Brunswick-based artists working in any media for this collaborative exhibition project, to be presented at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery from July to December of 2020.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Trans-Canada Highway officially opened in 1961 and was completed in 1970, ushering in a new era of car-based tourism and cementing New Brunswick’s status as the “drive-through province” of cross-country travel. This mid-late 20th century tourism boom also coincided with still and motion photographic technology becoming more accessible to the masses; colour film and Super 8 became widely available in the 1960s and ‘70s. This led to the rise of the roadside attraction, and Canada’s “Picture Province,” as was touted on the license plates of the time, became littered with “World’s Biggest”s and natural oddities which now mainly exist on forgotten stretches of two-lane highway and in shoeboxes full of old slides in closets across the country.

This project examines the histories of New Brunswick’s tourism industry – vestiges of the infrastructure that remains from its heyday; the effects of trends in tourism on local communities & the natural landscape; and tourism’s ongoing relationship to colonial power. Roadside Attraction poses questions about New Brunswick identity, art vs. kitsch, and ever-changing trends in public interest. Where does one draw the line between public sculpture and tourist trap? How can we re-imagine the roadside attraction for a 21st century world?
