The winners of the 2021 Atlantic Book Awards (ABAS) will be announced virtually in an event hosted by CTV Atlantic’s Amanda Debison on Thursday, May 13, 2021, with prizes presented by previous winners, including Michael Crummey, Sheree Fitch and Ami McKay.

There will be fourteen awards given out, plus the Pioneer Award, which recognizes a lifetime contribution to writing and publishing in Atlantic Canada.

ABAS presents three more events in this year’s Festival: Storytellers of Cape Breton (Monday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m.), Poetry & Prose:  A Discussion of Craft on Tuesday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Understanding our Past:  Exploring Nova Scotia’s History on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m.  All events feature this year’s shortlisted authors in conversation and are free; links from the ABAS website or its Facebook page.

Moncton, April 7, 2021 – The Acadian Association of Professional Artists of New Brunswick announces today that the Soirée des Éloizes will be broadcast on television on June 5, 2021 to resolve a scheduling challenge with the Gala Trillium Gold.

Radio-Canada will broadcast the Soirée des Éloizes on Saturday, June 5 at 8 p.m. (Atlantic time), 8:30 p.m. (Newfoundland time), on ICI Télé in the Atlantic provinces. It will also be possible to listen to it at the same time via the Internet on radiocanada.ca/acadie . The show will also air on ICI ARTV at 8 p.m. across the country. It will then be available for catch-up on ICI TOU.TV for one year.

March 16, 2021 – Music·Musique NB is proud to announce that Cal Johnson (photo below), of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, is the first recipient of the Indigenous Artist Development Program. The initiative was created to provide one emerging Indigenous artist with the tools, support and guidance to achieve a new musical project.

Multi-instrumentalist Cal Johnson plans to re-record traditional Wolastoqiyik songs, previously recorded by Elders from the Tobique First Nation community. The songs will be re-imagined in an EP format and include a full musical accompaniment, as the original recordings have no instrumentation apart from the traditional drum.

Cal Johnson will be supported throughout this project by Mi’kmaq artist Wolf Castle, from the Pabineau First Nation, as well as by the Music·Musique NB (MNB) team. Hip Hop artist Wolf Castle initiated the project to create more spaces where Indigenous voices can be heard.

“We hope that this pilot project becomes a full-fledged recurring program,” says Jean Surette, Executive Director of MNB. “Our goal is to widen the scope and support many more emerging Indigenous artists.”

Cal Johnson is currently residing in Truro, where he completed the Music Arts Program at NSCC.

Judges announced for New Brunswick Book Awards; Deadline to enter December 1

The Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick and The Fiddlehead have announced the judges for the 6th annual New Brunswick Book Awards. The program will celebrate books published in the 2020 calendar year in the poetry, fiction and nonfiction categories and children’s picture books published in the 2019 and 2020 calendar years. Submissions will be accepted until December 1, 2020.

The awards and judges are:

Mrs. Dunster’s Award for Fiction – Mark Sampson is the author of several novels, most recent All the Animals on Earth, short story and poetry collections.

Alice Kitts Memorial Award for Excellence in Children’s Writing – Frieda Wishinsky is the author of over 60 trade and educational children’s books including picture books, chapter books, novels, and nonfiction.

The Fiddlehead Poetry Book Prize – Yusuf Saadi is the winner of the The Malahat Review‘s 2016 Far Horizons Award for Poetry and the 2016 Vallum Chapbook Award. His first collection, Pluviophile, was selected for the CBC’s 2020 summer reading list.

Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick Nonfiction Award – Naomi Lewis is a fiction and nonfiction writer, editor, and creative writing teacher. Her 2019 memoir, Tiny Lights for Travellers has won a number of awards, most recently she won Alberta’s Wilfrid Eggleston Award for Nonfiction. and her journalism has been shortlisted for provincial and national magazine awards.

The New Brunswick Book Awards is open to traditionally published and self-published authors who have lived in the province for three of the last five years, including the award year. AWARD OF DISTINCTION – 25 ^th ANNIVERSARY OF MUSÉE ACADIEN DE L’UNIVERSITÉ DE MONCTON’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The Musée acadien de l’Université de Moncton (MAUM) is proud to announce that the 25 ^th anniversary of the educational program is the recipient of the 2020 Award of Distinction from the Association Heritage New Brunswick (AHNB) .

During the annual virtual conference of the Association Heritage New Brunswick on October 15, the selection committee highlighted the success of the MAUM’s educational program, while congratulating Jeanne Mance Cormier, department head and curator, and Sophie Mallet, museum educator, for their work of innovation and creativity in the constant evolution of the program.

This educational program, offered in both official languages, began 25 years ago thanks to the museum’s rich collections and increased demand from schools in southeastern New Brunswick.
