The Remix Collective

The Remix Collective is comprised of five Canadian artists from different backgrounds and life experiences: Norman Barney (Petrolia, Ontario), Claude Bolduc (Montreal, Quebec), Karine Giboulo (Montreal, Quebec), Terry Graff (Island View, New Brunswick), and Laurie Langford (Chatham, Ontario). Characterized by a directness of expression in a variety of media, their provocative ‘Singular Art’ is outside of the Canadian mainstream. They employ humour and satire to navigate challenging statements about society, politics, history, and the human condition.

As an American living in Canada, and a member of a very politically engaged family, Norman Barney’s practice is critical of American culture and politics, as well as the fraught relationship America has with violence.

Sexuality, mythology and criticism are key elements of Claude Bolduc’s drawings and paintings. Zoomorphic and anthropomorphic metamorphizations are present in his works exemplified by his series “The Tarot of JĂ©zabel and Merlin (A Story of Love)”.

Karine Giboulo creates thought-provoking dioramas with highly elaborate constructions of toy-like settings with miniature figurines and houses. These assemblages turn doll play into a subversive nightmare and give focus to critical global issues.

The haunting figure of the bird, often depicted in a mutated form, is the leitmotif of Terry Graff’s art. His work deals with subjects such as real-life horrors in the world: war, environmental degradation, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

Laurie Langford employs subversive humour in her mixed media works to comment on the conventions of sexuality, domesticity, family, history and the body in order to stimulate debate on contemporary gender expectations.

Since 1976, Galerie Colline has been committed to exhibiting and encouraging excellence in contemporary art practices. We are proud to present this virtual exhibition of five contemporary artists whose works incite us to look critically at our current realities.

Introducing the Stage Equality Initiative

Theatre New Brunswick announces a new development program aimed at bringing the voices of New Brunswick women to the stage. February 3, 2021 (Fredericton) Following the success of its inaugural Fall Festival of New Plays which championed the voices of 12 new, emerging and established New Brunswick playwrights by providing mentorship, dramaturgy and staged readings of new work through various digital technologies, TNB has now announced the Stage Equality Initiative, a new program aimed specifically at developing new work from New Brunswick female playwrights.

The 2021 Stage Equality Initiative will support the work of Samaqani Cocahq-Natalie Sappier (Tobique First Nation), Jena McLean (Fredericton) and Kirsten Alter (Quispamsis).

“We’re excited to launch this new project with new work by three New Brunswick women whose collective work and history is directly informed by their experience as members of the broader queer, Indigenous and BIPOC communities,” said TNB Artistic Director Natasha MacLellan. “We believe this initiative will not only help to highlight the work of three diverse New Brunswick women, but also speak to the continued importance theatre plays in reflecting our regional culture, a culture that’s diversity is often overlooked in the fields of literature, music and theatre.”

The Stage Equality Initiative will mark TNB’s first major investment in the development of new work by New Brunswick women. This new initiative will provide a creation grant to each participating playwright as well as dramaturgical support and a digital strategy aimed at elevating these three women and their work to a national audience through readings, video interviews and other digital means.

“We see both our Fall Festival and The Stage Equality Initiative as cornerstones in our renewed investment in New Brunswick playwrights,” said MacLellan. “It is our aim to make these new initiatives an annual part of our programming at Theatre New Brunswick. The generous support we received from the Greater Saint John Community Foundation’s Fund for Gender Equality will allow us to create, test and deliver our first year of the Stage Equality Initiative and help plot a future path to welcoming the voices of more women to stages here in New Brunswick, and across the country. That’s pretty exciting stuff!”

This project was supported through a $12,000 grant from the Greater Saint John Community Foundation and the Fund for Gender Equality (Community Foundations of Canada). The Fund for Gender Equality (The Fund) was created to shift power into the hands of women, girls, TwoSpirit and gender-diverse individuals by supporting their leadership and engagement in community-level initiatives.

About the Playwrights

Kirsten Alter
Hailing from Quispamsis, NB, Kirsten is thrilled to be part of TNB’s Fall Festival of New Plays. Thank you, Natasha! For the last 20 plus years Kirsten has been a stage/tv/film and voice over actor. Her most recent stage role was Sally Applewhite in TNB’s It’s a Wonderful Life: The Live Radio Play. Other memorable roles include Suzy in the Vancouver Playhouse/Canstage production of Margaret Edson’s Wit, Joni in acclaimed writer Cheryl Foggo’s John War Reimagined for Calgary’s Ellipsis Tree Collective Theatre Company and Edmonton’s Workshop West Playwrights Theatre, and Liv in much-celebrated writer Norm Foster’s Come Down From Up River, for the Foster Festival.

Jena McLean
Jena McLean is a queer playwright whose work is focused on personalizing the political and using theatre to explore life’s grey areas. She holds a B.A. in English and Drama Studies from Mount Allison University. In 2017, she was commissioned to create and co-direct Paradoxes: The Life and Music of Fanny Hensel, an interdisciplinary play with music. Other works include Missing Her Mother (dramaturgy by Andrea Romaldi), A Canyon Contained (dramaturgy by Erin Shields), an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Freeze-Dried Groom (dramaturgy by Nick Carpenter), and I Am, which won Notable Acts Theatre Festival’s inaugural high school playwriting competition. She is currently in her final year of studies at the National Theatre School of Canada, where she is developing a Theatre for Young Audiences play (Dramaturgy by Dean Fleming) and Bonus Points if You Have Air Conditioning (Dramaturgy by Nick Carpenter) a meta-theatrical examination of love and dramatic structure.

Samaqani Cocahq-(Natalie Sappier)
Samaqani Cocahq-(Natalie Sappier) is a Wolastoqiyik Indigenous multidisciplinary storyteller from Tobique First Nation, New Brunswick. She began her arts practice as a painter. Painting is what awakened her healing journey. Reconnecting to the land and learning ancestral teachings became the core of her storytelling. She realized early in her painting career that she was not painting just for herself, but she was painting for her people – she is painting for her ancestors – she is painting for healing.
Today she feels her stories need to be louder than a painting can speak and is on a journey of expressing stories in many forms that includes visual arts, writing, song, spoken word, movement and dance. Many of her stories are guided by knowledge carriers and are done in collaboration with other Wabanaki Sisters and Brothers. For her, creating stories is an Indigenous way of being and teaching. She wrote and composed her first play Finding Wolastoq Voice during a residency at Theatre New Brunswick. The play toured the province and has since been presented on stages across the country including the National Arts Centre stage. She is currently developing a series of short plays titled, Stories of Maw.

The Backstays’ “No Hot Cargo”

Saint John’s The Backstays just released a new single “No Hot Cargo”. “The song was inspired by the small-but-mighty protests in Saint John, against Canada’s arms trade and the sale of Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs) to Saudi Arabia while it inflicted war upon Yemen,” said The Backstays’ Pete Johnston (he/him). “These combat vehicles are made in Ontario, and have been quietly shipped out of the Port of Saint John for the past few years.” +++ info >

Post Script

What is Post Script?

In April 2020, just weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched Dear Rona – Letters from Lockdown, a story collection project aimed at exploring life in the time of a worldwide pandemic. The idea was simple. We wanted to hear from you – our friends – to learn how everyone was coping with this unexpected turn of events. Part social documentary, part collective therapy, the project was an attempt to stay connected with our audience while providing a creative outlet for the panic, fear and uncertainty we’ve all experienced over the past many months. The response was incredible.

During the five month submission period (April – August) we received numerous responses in the form of emails, handwritten letters, postcards, collage art, photos, recorded messages and a few videos. We even received a pair of pandemic inspired scripts! Spanning the full range of human emotion, this project helped reinforce the fact that no two people have had the same experience.

When we launched the project, we had no real concrete plan for what to do, if anything, with the stories we received. Our original call for submissions stated that all submitted work may be used to inform a future project. We just didn’t know what that project would look like until now.

As we near the one year anniversary of this pandemic’s arrival, and begin to see a glimpse of light at the end of this tunnel, we’re excited to announce Post Script, a unique work of theatre delivered directly to your mailbox in the form of weekly postcards from an unknown friend.

Audiences can choose one of three storylines to be delivered through the mail over the course of six weeks, beginning the week of April 5 – one year after the launch of Dear Rona.

Choose A Story

Post Script #1: Self-Love and Solitude

In this script, we follow one person’s journey to self-love. After the dissolution of their marriage, they are forced to cope with the aftermath of change. COVID further disorients their routine and introduces them to a world of solitude. How do we find meaning in isolation?

Post Script #2: So Much Time = So Much Art

The timeline is neither short nor certain. Each of us are separated but globally connected through a shared experience. In this story, a young artist struggles with their own creativity, senselessly comparing their productivity to others, while searching for meaningful connection.

Post Script #3: Just Slow Down!

We live in a fast-paced society that prides productivity and hard work. Sometimes it’s easy to dismiss the subtle pleasures in our environment and be fully present. In this piece, our character finds the space to slow down and reflect on what they are grateful for while searching for ways to engage with nature and keep their mind sharp.

Buy Tickets

Due to the handwritten nature of Post Script, this production series is limited to just 100 tickets.

Tickets are $25 (plus taxes and fees = $31.67) can be purchased through Eventbrite. Don’t miss out!

Developed by Joanna Bryson, Matt Carter and Natasha MacLellan
Inspired by stories collected through the story collection project Dear Rona – Letters From Lockdown

Note: This project is not available outside of Canada.

Cross Cultural Creation Residency

We’re so excited to open up our call for artists for this year’s Cross Cultural Creation residency! This year’s residency will be a return to the roots of creation, bringing ten artists together in Kouchibouguac National Park to create art in a low-technology setting.

The paid residency, which will take place from May 31 to June 9, 2021, is now accepting applications for artists of any discipline who are interested in leaving their high-tech set up behind and spending ten days surrounded by the beauty of New Brunswick’s Acadian Coast.

Ten artists will be selected: three Anglophone artists, three Francophone artists, and three Indigenous artists, as well as one jury’s choice. Artists of all disciplines are welcome to apply as long as their proposed work fits within the limitations of the setting (no ultra high-tech setups that need the internet and multiple plug ins).

The residency is a collaboration between ArtsLink NB, the Association acadienne des artistes professionel.le.s du Nouveau Brunswick (AAAPNB), and Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective. Applications are open until Friday, February 26, 2021.

For more information, and to apply, head to our website at www.artslinknb.com, Mawi’Art’s website at https://www.mawiart.org/ or to the aaapnb website at http://www.aaapnb.ca/.
